IU1 Staff Induction
Congratulations on being hired by the Intermediate Unit 1! On this webpage, you will find information that will help lead you to the successful completion of the IU 1 Induction Program.
Inductees will be assigned a mentor by their supervisor or principal. Required coursework will include an ePortfolio and the successful completion of online training through the IU1’s training platform, SafeSchools. The Inductee's immediate supervisor and mentor will oversee the inductee's coursework to ensure the selection and completion of the required classes.
- Year 1
- Meet with mentor 9 times throughout the year

Vector Training, K-12 Edition Training :: Introduction to Induction (New IU1 Professional Staff) Custom: Introduction to Induction Course (SafeSchools)- Mentors will provide inductees with links, log-in, etc.
- Complete Induction ePortfolio by the end of Year 1
- Mentors and Supervisors document portfolio completion via Year 1 ePortfolio Submission Form.
- Upon completion of Year 1, inductees can apply to the PDE for Level 2 Certification,
***(if you meet all PDE criteria)- IU1 Inductees must complete three years of induction programming as per the collective bargaining agreement.
- Year 2
- Meet with mentor 9 times throughout the year (face-to-face/virtually/phone)
- Complete 3 courses assigned by supervisor and monitored by mentor on Safe Schools site
- Year 3
- Meet with mentor 9 times throughout the year (face-to-face/virtually/phone)
- Complete 3 new courses (different from Year 2 courses) assigned by supervisor and monitored by mentor on Safe Schools site
- Within the first month of being assigned a mentor/mentee, the mentor/mentee must meet to review the induction plan, set additional required meeting dates, and select coursework for the year.
- Mentor Responsibilities
- Complete the mentor online course through Safe Schools.
- Support Inductees in the completion all required Induction Classes through Safe Schools.
- For mentors of first-year inductees: Meet with inductees face-to-face or virtually to review their ePortfolio at the end of the year and complete at least nine contacts (face-to-face/virtually/phone) with each assigned inductee, keeping a log of the conversations.
- For mentors of second and third-year inductees: Support the progress of 3 courses for each year in Safe Schools and complete at least nine contacts (face-to-face/virtually/phone) with each assigned inductee and keep a log of the conversations.
- Ensure that the Inductee has completed the year-end checklist at the end of each year and submit to Sarah Collins (sarah.collins@iu1.org) by their assigned due dates.
- For inductees hired in June - December, the due date is June 1.
- For inductees hired in January - May, the due date is January 1.
- Support the Inductees by addressing questions related to the Induction Program, job responsibilities, professional best practices, and certifications.
- Mentors will collect all paperwork due each year and send it together in one packet to
Sarah Collins (sarah.collins@iu1.org). Packet should include all appropriate documentation, including mentor checklists, contact logs and supervisor checklists. - Information on Induction and required Induction paperwork can be found on the IU1 WebPortal.
- Mentors will continue to mentor inductees over a three-year period and complete yearly logs and paperwork.
- Administration reserves the right to adjust the assigned induction classes as necessary.
- Employees will be responsible for submitting all certificates of completion to
Sarah Collins (sarah.collins@iu1.org). to be eligible for Act 48 hours. Act 48 hours will be uploaded at the end of the induction year. - Long term subs (45 days or more in a single assignment) will also take induction course work.
- A Mentor will be assigned, and the number of days compensated will be prorated based on the number of days the sub worked
